Soil remediation of chlorinated solvents

Technology: Mult-phase extraction, Pump & Treat and airsparging

Odfjell/Koole Terminals B.V. is one of the largest independent tank storage terminals in Europe. The location is centrally located in the heart of the port of Rotterdam and has been operational since 1957. On behalf of Odfjell, Verhoeve and Groundwater Technology conduct a soil and groundwater remediation. The remediation site, zone 1, has an area of approximately 42,000 m² and is the oldest part of the site of Odfjell/Koole. The area has storage tanks and associated pipework, where a wide spectrum of products is stored and processed. The contaminants found in the soil are a reflection of this. The site is contaminated with mineral oil, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, cyanide, volatile hydrocarbons and chlorinated hydrocarbons. The contamination of zone 1 is removed by means of multi-phase extraction (MPE) and compressed air injections (PLI).

With the MPE unit, pure product combined with groundwater and vapour air is extracted with a low flow rate and under relatively high under-pressure. The extracted contaminated groundwater and frequently pure product is conducted through tubing to the central water treatment plant (WTP). Air purification will take place through the active carbon filters of the WTP. Due to the extraction of high concentrations of flammable benzene vapors, a safety and HAZOP study was carried out for the MPE installation.

The aromatics / oils are aerobically degraded using compressed air injections (sparging). Sparging is a proven concept that has been successfully applied several times by Verhoeve Milieu & Water.

The MPE and PLI units are supported by the information and operating system C.A.R.S. and PLC matrix control system. Thanks to the C.A.R.S. Verhoeve Environment & Water system has 24/7 insight and influence on process management. In this way, the soil and groundwater are remediated in an efficient and sustainable manner.
